Recent research highlights that states with “Shall Issue” concealed carry laws see a considerable rise in handgun purchases, with online handgun purchases increasing by 21% and background checks by 35%. The study, conducted by researchers from Bocconi University and National Taiwan University, identified that over 70% of these purchases are made by repeat buyers, notably in urban and high-crime areas.
In contrast, the study found that “Permitless Carry” laws do not correlate with any significant change in handgun sales, suggesting that individuals eligible to carry concealed firearms may have already acquired their weapons prior to such regulation changes. By analyzing data from 2010 to 2017, the researchers provide important insights into how changes in gun laws impact firearm demand across the United States.
