Rise in Self-Inflicted Shootings Among Kids in Indy

Indianapolis police report a staggering 113% rise in accidental, non-fatal gunshot injuries for 2025, with 24% of the victims under 18 years old. Most of these incidents could have been prevented, revealing concerning trends of poor gun storage and illegal straw purchases that enable teens to access firearms.

In March alone, there were 16 self-inflicted accidental shootings—a shocking 220% increase from the previous year. IMPD Deputy Chief Kendale Adams emphasizes the community’s responsibility in safe firearm practices and has initiated emotional wellness checkups for detectives dealing with the aftermath of these traumatic events. To aid in prevention, free gun locks are available at Indianapolis Public Library locations, encouraging responsible gun ownership.
