In a poignant effort to combat gun violence, Bertha Ceballos hosts the 2nd annual Moms Against Gun Violence Walk in downtown Rockford, remembering her son Joey Torres and nephew Jorge Torres, who were tragically killed on June 30, 2023. Despite inclement weather cutting the traditional 2.5-mile walk short, participants gathered outside the Winnebago County Justice Center, driven by a shared commitment to honor those who can no longer speak for themselves.
Ceballos emphasizes the importance of spreading awareness and supporting mothers who have faced similar tragedies, stating, “Walking for the ones that cannot walk no more, speaking for those that cannot speak no more.” With plans for future events and a court date for her son’s alleged killer approaching, Ceballos aims to transform her grief into action, reminding the community of the ongoing fight against gun violence and the need for justice.
