The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, along with local agencies, organizes an anonymous gun buyback event on Saturday, August 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 400 Harbor Blvd. in Belmont, aiming to enhance community safety by facilitating the removal of unwanted firearms. Sheriff Christina Corpus emphasizes that these events help prevent tragic accidents by reducing the number of unsecured firearms in homes.
Since launching in 2018, the program has successfully collected nearly 3,000 firearms, ensuring their safe destruction. In spring 2024 alone, participants turned in 297 firearms, including 24 assault weapons and a machine gun. Attendees will receive cash incentives between $50 and $200, and free gun locks will be provided, reflecting the commitment to making San Mateo County a safer place.
