The St. Maries School District in North Idaho is set to permit teachers and staff to carry concealed firearms starting the next school year, following a unanimous school board vote. This controversial policy aims to enhance security for the district’s approximately 900 students across four schools, allowing qualified staff to apply for the right to carry under strict conditions, including an Enhanced Concealed Carry Weapons License and rigorous annual training.
While 68% of parents surveyed expressed strong support for the policy, the approval from staff was more divided, with only 40.4% in favor. The implementation of this policy aligns with a broader strategy to ensure campus safety, which also includes upgrades like surveillance cameras and managed access points. Interested employees must meet specific criteria, and their identities will remain confidential to maintain a discreet safety environment.
