As gun violence escalates across the United States, several states are taking legislative action to ban “Glock switches,” which are devices that transform semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons capable of firing up to 1,200 rounds per minute. With Alabama recently becoming the 26th state to outlaw these conversion devices, bipartisan support among lawmakers indicates a growing acknowledgment of public safety concerns tied to these modifications, especially following incidents like a mass shooting in Birmingham last September where such devices were used.
In 2023 alone, law enforcement recovered over 4,500 of these conversion devices at crime scenes, reflecting a staggering 784% increase since 2019. As states like New Mexico and New Jersey move to tighten regulations, cities and states are also filing lawsuits against Glock, alleging that the company has failed to address the illegal use of its firearms with these dangerous modifications. The intensifying scrutiny signals a potential shift in the gun control debate, as communities seek effective measures to mitigate rising gun-related fatalities.
