States Enhance Tracking for Stolen Guns Amid Federal Gaps

To combat gun trafficking and enhance law enforcement efforts, more states are implementing laws requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms. Recent statistics show that firearms taken from private citizens account for nearly 95% of all stolen guns, making timely reporting essential to prevent their use in crimes. For example, Connecticut’s mandated reporting helped authorities investigate a case involving a man linked to over 30 gun purchases, many of which were tied to criminal activity.

As legislative sessions continue, at least four states are poised to introduce new reporting requirements, filling a significant gap left by federal laws that only apply to dealers. Research indicates that guns reported as lost are three times more likely to be used in crimes, and stolen guns see a staggering nine-fold increased likelihood. Advocates argue that these laws could not only help track stolen firearms but also disrupt patterns of straw purchasing and gun trafficking effectively.
