Teen Shot by Deputy Had Illegal Firearm Modification

Authorities confirm that Tyren J. Kinloch, a 17-year-old shot by a Berkeley County deputy, was armed with a handgun equipped with an illegal switch device that alters a semi-automatic firearm into a fully automatic weapon. The incident occurred during a traffic stop on Tuesday night when Kinloch exited the vehicle and pointed a weapon at pursuing deputies, prompting one to return fire.

This tragic event marks the second officer-involved shooting for the sheriff’s office this year and sheds light on a concerning increase in such incidents across South Carolina, with this being the 15th in 2025 alone. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now investigating the shooting as protocol following such occurrences, raising questions about gun control and the safety of officers in the line of duty.
