The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department (TLCHD) and the Toledo VA Outpatient Clinic are collaborating to enhance gun safety in the community by distributing free gun locks. This initiative is part of the observance of National Gun Violence Awareness Day and aims to educate residents on responsible gun ownership practices, particularly focusing on the storage of firearms to prevent unintentional injuries among children and suicides among veterans.
As part of this effort, free gun locks will be available at designated locations from June 5 to June 6 at the TLCHD and Monday through Friday at the Toledo VA Clinic, accessible only to veterans. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that approximately 70% of veteran suicides involve firearms, making secure storage critical in crisis situations. TLCHD emphasizes that unintentional shootings involving children often occur with unsecured, loaded firearms, highlighting the importance of safe storage practices that could significantly reduce these tragic incidents.
