UW School of Medicine Introduces Firearm Safety Courses

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health launches courses focused on firearm safety as part of efforts to reduce injury and death. In light of alarming trends, including firearms as the leading cause of death for children aged 1-19 in the U.S., clinical professor Dr. James Bigham emphasizes the importance of equipping primary care physicians with the tools to address firearm safety sensitively and competently.

These courses combine classroom learning with hands-on training provided in partnership with a local gun shop, promoting a safe environment for medical students to engage with and understand firearms better. Dr. Bigham aims to bridge the communication gap between healthcare providers and patients regarding gun ownership, stressing that the right terminology can significantly enhance patient understanding and safety. This initiative could set a standard for firearm injury prevention education across medical schools, making a notable impact on community health and safety.
