Washington’s Office of Independent Investigations (OII) has released its first report on a police shooting, marking a significant step in the agency’s efforts to provide unbiased reviews of deadly encounters between law enforcement and civilians. The report investigates the Dec. 4, 2024, shooting of Adam Grant Gunderson, detailing how a Vancouver police officer shot Gunderson five times at point-blank range during a struggle outside a supermarket, where he was confronted for rummaging through a dumpster.
The 99-page document emphasizes the agency’s commitment to transparency and fairness in policing, a key reform initiative established by the 2021 legislature. Notably, Gunderson had a felony warrant for his arrest and harbored anti-government sentiments, complicating the narrative of the incident. The findings will be forwarded to local prosecutors to determine if charges are warranted against the officers involved, as the OII employs civilian investigators to navigate the traditionally insular processes of police oversight.
