Walmart has been fined $16,000 for violating New York state law by shipping realistic toy guns, Attorney General Letitia James announced. This action comes in response to a 2015 legislation prohibiting the sale of toy guns that resemble real firearms, a measure aimed at preventing incidents like the tragic case of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, killed by police while holding a pellet gun in 2014.
The investigation revealed that third-party sellers on Walmart’s platform managed to ship these illegal toys to various locations in New York, including New York City. In addition to the fine, Walmart’s senior manager stated that the company is committed to complying with all laws and has processes to ensure third-party compliance, raising questions about oversight in online retail practices.
