WSP Prepares for Increased Workload from Gun Permit Bill

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is bracing for a significant increase in workload if a new bill mandating permits for gun purchases becomes law. Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill 1163, which recently passed the House, stipulates that buyers must obtain a permit, complete certified firearm training, and undergo two background checks—one at the point of application and another at the time of purchase. This will require WSP to hire an additional 24 staff members to manage the anticipated increase in background checks, which currently sees about 250,000 processed annually.

This legislation, which reflects growing concerns over gun safety, comes with a potential wait time of 30 days for permit approval followed by a 10-day waiting period before buying a firearm. Critics have raised alarms over possible delays affecting individuals requiring immediate protection, referencing past cases where such delays led to tragic outcomes. The bill has garnered considerable attention in Olympia and is set for further legislative review.
