In the past year, Anchorage has witnessed a total of 13 officer-involved shootings, with eight resulting in fatalities, according to recently released body-camera footage. Most of these incidents have been documented by body cameras; however, one high-profile case remains under investigation by the Office of Special Prosecutions, which reviews law enforcement investigations to determine the necessity of criminal charges against officers.
The Anchorage Police Department has committed to enhancing transparency with a new policy mandating the release of body-camera footage within 45 days of critical incidents. This initiative aims to foster better relations between law enforcement and the community, as recent cases, including the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Kristopher Handy, raised questions regarding officer conduct and the circumstances surrounding these violent encounters.
