In a powerful display of unity, young people in Indianapolis, including members of the G3 Steppers, participate in the annual Peace Walk to shine a light on the devastating effects of gun violence on their lives. This year’s event is particularly poignant following the tragic death of Deandra, a beloved 14-year-old stepper, who was shot in January. The walk coincides with National Youth Violence Prevention Week and aims to not only honor lives lost but also to engage the community in discussions about violence and its repercussions.
Participants hold signs and chant the names of victims, emphasizing that “one person is too many” when it comes to youth fatalities from gun violence. With recent statistics showing nine children lost to gun violence in 2024, community leaders are working tirelessly to implement awareness initiatives alongside public safety measures. During the event, organizers distribute free gun lock boxes and encourage attendees to wear a green rubber band symbolizing their commitment to promoting peace and safety throughout the city.
