On February 18, 2013, a gang of armed robbers executed what has been described as a ‘perfect crime,’ stealing $80 million worth of diamonds from Brussels Airport in a meticulously planned operation. The thieves, disguised in dark police uniforms, gained access by cutting an opening in the airport’s perimeter fence and swiftly commandeered a shipment of gems being transferred from a plane to an armored security van, all within five minutes.
In the aftermath, authorities arrested dozens in a three-nation investigation, recovering some of the stolen gems. However, a Belgian court acquitted 18 suspects due to insufficient evidence, and the primary suspect, Marc Bertoldi, was only sentenced in 2019.
