The Edisto Unit of the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge, located in southern Charleston County, serves as a crucial habitat for waterfowl, hosting an estimated 10,000 ducks at its Grove impoundment this February. This 7,300-acre refuge, with its historic Grove Plantation house, offers visitors expansive trails and observation decks, allowing for unique wildlife photography opportunities.
Refuge Manager Brett Craig highlights the area’s importance, noting that unlike neighboring hunting properties, the Grove’s impoundment remains flooded until March, providing essential feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds. This strategic decision not only benefits waterfowl but also attracts a variety of wading and shorebirds throughout the year, making the refuge a vital ecological resource.
