The Baltimore County Police Department recently released body cam footage showing the moment a 16-year-old student, Taki Allen, was detained after an AI gun detection system misidentified a bag of chips as a firearm. The incident occurred outside Kenwood High School when officers responded to reports of a suspicious individual with a weapon, leading to Allen being surrounded by armed police just minutes after finishing football practice.

This false positive, revealed in footage recorded on October 20, raises concerns about AI technology’s reliability in school safety protocols. The security firm Omnilert acknowledged the error, noting the system misinterpreted the way the students were eating snacks. As authorities clarify the incident, Baltimore County Public Schools is offering counseling services to students affected, while Allen expressed feeling unsafe and uncared for during the event.
