Bronx Teens Tackle Gun Violence Through Entrepreneurship

In a unique approach to combat gun violence, Bronx teens are launching their own businesses, receiving grants to empower their entrepreneurial efforts. This initiative coincides with June’s Gun Violence Awareness Month and occurs alongside new NYPD statistics showing a historic decline in citywide homicides but a troubling rise in shootings in certain precincts, with a 30.8% increase in the 40th Precinct this year.

At an event in Bronx Borough Hall, local leaders, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and District Attorney Darcel Clark, emphasized that fostering young entrepreneurs can provide alternative opportunities and keep youth engaged in positive activities. The event featured young entrepreneurs like Shania Mayfield and Kayla Moore, whose nonprofit aims to offer tutoring services, illustrating how community-driven efforts can directly counter the dangers posed by gun violence.
