Brooklyn Sees 29% Drop in Homicides Amid Safety Efforts

Gun violence in Brooklyn experiences a remarkable decline in the first half of 2025, with homicides dropping by 29%, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. The statistics reveal a 19% reduction in shootings and a 15% decrease in shooting victims, marking a record low for this time of year. Brooklyn DA Gonzalez emphasizes that these reductions reflect saved lives and a growing sense of safety among residents, attributing success to data-driven strategies involving local law enforcement and community partnerships.

Notably, public housing areas have seen the most significant improvements, with homicides plunging by 60% and shootings falling by 34%. Gonzalez reported just 41 homicides compared to 58 last year at the same point, showcasing a broader trend across Brooklyn’s 23 precincts, where eight reported no homicides at all. This strategic focus on violent individuals, alongside continuous investigations and community initiatives, positions Brooklyn on a promising path towards further reducing crime rates in the future.
