Buncombe County launches a series of events this June to raise awareness and promote safe gun practices in response to a troubling increase in fatalities from gun-related incidents. So far in 2024, the county has recorded 44 deaths due to firearms, affecting individuals as young as 16 and as old as 94, underscoring the urgent need for community action.
The month’s activities, which kick off on June 3, include a “Guns to Gardens” event where surrendered firearms will be transformed into garden tools. This initiative forms part of the NC S.A.F.E. campaign, which emphasizes secure firearm storage to prevent accidents, particularly among youth. Community members will come together to honor victims of gun violence and commit to safer practices, highlighting the shared responsibility of gun ownership.
