Following the death of 17-year-old Zaquavious “Tank” Dawkins, and the subsequent arrest of suspect Sean Simpson, concerns over youths accessing firearms have intensified, with local police reporting 183 stolen guns in 2024 alone and 45 firearm-related homicides recorded since 2020, including five involving minors.
Community leaders like Pastor Monica Colbert and volunteer coach Finland Fair emphasize the need for mentorship and positive activities for young people to curb violence. Fair, who coached both victims, points out that many kids lack proper outlets and support, urging for initiatives that can offer guidance, such as boxing and conflict resolution programs. As families mourn their losses, the community seeks a collaborative approach to foster a safer environment for its youth.
