Crossbow Attack on Pet Shop Owner in NJ

A New Jersey pet shop owner, Katarina Ruk, was shot in the face with a crossbow by a longtime customer, identified as 53-year-old Raymond Carey. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. while Ruk was alone in her Saddle Brook store. She describes how she was taken by surprise when Carey pulled out the weapon from a bag and shot her. In a desperate struggle, Ruk managed to knock the crossbow from his hands and ran to seek help from a nearby bike shop.

Ruk underwent emergency treatment for her significant injuries, including the loss of three teeth and cuts to her lips and tongue. She anticipates a five-month recovery but admits the emotional impact is far worse, stating she now feels an ongoing sense of insecurity. Carey is currently in jail facing attempted murder charges, and Ruk is left wondering why someone she thought she knew well could commit such a violent act.
