In response to the recent findings, the commission has shifted from mandatory to voluntary testing, indicating a hopeful change in managing the disease’s spread. Deer biologist April Boggs Pope emphasizes the importance of precautions, including not consuming deer that test positive, as the disease can remain dormant for up to two years. With a track record of 34 positive cases since 2022, local hunters are urged to stay informed and take necessary safety measures.
