Dallas County Commissioners have authorized Sheriff Marian Brown to request over 30 military-grade M14 and M16 rifles, along with a mine-resistant armored personnel carrier (APC). This decision comes during a special session, the motivations for which remain unclear, but it reflects a growing push for enhanced public safety and emergency preparedness in the county.
The gear, obtained at no cost through the Department of Defense’s Law Enforcement Support Office, will be used strictly for supporting public safety initiatives, including counter-terrorism. While County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins expressed concerns about the implications of using an APC in certain neighborhoods, he acknowledged scenarios where such equipment could be necessary, highlighting the ongoing dialogue about law enforcement’s use of military surplus in civilian areas.
