ATF Launches Campaign Against Illegal Gun Purchases in NOLA

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is launching its “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign in New Orleans, aiming to educate the community about the serious consequences of illegal firearm purchases. This initiative highlights the dangerous practice of “straw purchasing,” where individuals buy firearms for those legally prohibited from owning them, significantly increasing the risk of gun violence.

ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson stresses that violators face stringent penalties, including up to 15 years in prison and significant fines. This month-long campaign serves as a critical reminder for residents to remain vigilant against practices that enable felons and domestic abusers to acquire weapons unlawfully. Those looking to purchase firearms must navigate strict background checks and adhere to state and local regulations to ensure compliance.
