The Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) reports that nine localities in Virginia are responsible for more than 50% of the state’s gun-related homicides. This alarming statistic highlights the concentration of violence particularly around Richmond and Hampton Roads, where 65% of gun homicides occur in public spaces, affecting innocent bystanders in neighborhoods plagued by frequent shootings.
Despite a statewide decline in gun-related deaths since 2022, the report indicates persistent violence in these areas, often stemming from disputes fueled by social media. With one in four killings linked to drug-related issues, programs like the Central Virginia Violence Interrupters aim to mitigate risks before they escalate. “You can’t save everybody and you can’t be at everywhere at the same time,” shares program member Bryan Page, emphasizing the community need for proactive measures to combat gun violence.
