The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources reports a remarkable 242 new sets of deer antlers entered into the state’s record books last year, showcasing the impressive quality of deer in the region. With a total of 8,418 sets now included in the records, hunters have more opportunities to learn how their harvested bucks compare against the best taken across the state.
To participate in the annual antler scoring sessions, hunters can bring their antlers to various locations throughout March, culminating at the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic at the end of the month. Typically, 500 to 600 antlers are scored each cycle, and 2023 saw nearly 50 percent qualify for entry, indicating a growing trend in both hunting management practices and the overall quality of deer in South Carolina.
