Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Waters is proactively addressing the alarming rise in accidental child shootings by collaborating with local students to distribute gun locks. Following the recent trend of at least five children unintentionally shooting themselves, Waters visits schools to educate students about gun safety and encourages them to pledge to deliver gun locks to households with unsecured firearms.
During her campaign, which began at Carleton Elementary School, Waters highlights the alarming awareness children have about gun access in their homes, stating, “Our children know where the guns are.” This initiative comes in light of a new Michigan law requiring that guns be stored securely in homes where children are present; however, the law hasn’t stopped recent tragedies. By empowering children to advocate for their safety through written pledges, Waters aims to foster a culture of responsibility and safety within the community.
