An Evanston man, Christian Haywood, faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, following a shooting incident in the emergency room of Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital. On June 5, after exhibiting signs of mental distress, he was admitted to the hospital where he later became agitated during the intake process, leading him to discharge a firearm and injure a 33-year-old female security guard. The guard underwent surgery and is reported to be in stable condition.
After the shooting, the hospital was placed on lockdown as police responded and secured the scene. Authorities reviewed evidence, including witness statements and video footage, which contributed to the charges against Haywood. The incident has raised concerns about security in emergency healthcare settings, prompting a review by hospital management to enhance safety protocols. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence and praised the responders’ professionalism during the crisis.
