Florida Man Arrested with Booby-Trapped Rifle on Train

A 34-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is charged with multiple offenses after carrying a suitcase filled with firearms, including a booby-trapped rifle, through New Jersey transit stations. This alarming incident culminated in his arrest at the Trenton Transit Center on January 3, 2025, following an investigation initiated when a transit officer discovered an unattended suitcase at Newark-Penn Station containing weapons and ammunition.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, Jefferey O. Kennerk, left behind a suitcase that included an AK-47-style rifle and attempted to board a train headed to Virginia. Remarkably, as law enforcement confiscated the booby-trapped rifle, it discharged unexpectedly, highlighting the potential danger posed by his actions. Authorities emphasized the serious public safety threat posed by illegal weapons and praised the swift police response that prevented a possible disaster.
