NY Felon Gets Up to 20 Years for Illegal Gun Possession

A New York man has been sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm at a gas station in Hilltown Township. Daniel Enrique Perez, 52, of Newburgh, was found guilty after police discovered a loaded Ruger pistol in his vehicle during a welfare check in November 2023, revealing his past felony convictions that prohibited him from owning a gun.

Testimony during the trial, which concluded in April, highlighted Perez’s altered state and slurred speech when officers arrived at the Sunoco gas station. Investigators also uncovered his suspended driver’s license and history of serious crimes, including a 1995 attempted murder conviction, underscoring the severity of his latest offense. The sentence imposed by Common Pleas Judge Stephen A. Corr reflects the aggravated range of Pennsylvania’s sentencing guidelines, raising questions about gun regulations for convicted felons.
