The Government Accountability Office (GAO) releases its 2025 Weapon Systems Annual Assessment, highlighting significant challenges in the Department of Defense’s (DOD) acquisition processes. The report indicates that costs for 30 Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAPs) have surged by a combined total of $49.3 billion, primarily driven by the Air Force’s Sentinel missile program, which alone accounted for 73% of the increase.
As the DOD plans to invest nearly $2.4 trillion in its most expensive weapon systems, the GAO emphasizes the urgent need for adopting leading product development practices to avoid further delays. With the expected timeframe for MDAPs to deliver initial capabilities extending to nearly 12 years, and several programs grappling with low technology maturity at inception, the report advocates for a reassessment of current practices to ensure timely and effective solutions for the warfighter.
