Gun Crime Drops in Ohio After Constitutional Carry Law

A recent study commissioned by Ohio’s Attorney General reveals that gun crime saw a notable decrease in six of the state’s eight largest cities after the implementation of constitutional carry on June 13, 2022. Notably, cities such as Parma, Akron, and Toledo experienced declines in gun crime rates of 22% and 18%, respectively, during the two-year period analyzed.

The report, published by the Center for Justice Research, emphasizes the need to focus on criminal behavior rather than responsible gun ownership. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost stated, “We need to focus on criminals, not responsible gun owners,” highlighting the shifting narrative surrounding firearm legislation. The implications of these findings could influence other states considering similar laws, as 27 states currently recognize constitutional carry in various forms.
