Gun Crimes Decline in Memphis, Still High Compared to Past

Gun crimes in Memphis saw a decline in 2024, with 7,221 incidents reported, down from 8,162 the previous year. However, the Memphis-Shelby Crime Commission emphasizes that these figures are “unacceptably higher” than in prior years, more than doubling the 2011 total of gun-related crimes.

Additionally, the number of firearms stolen from vehicles decreased to 1,615 in 2024, a 24% drop from 2023. Yet this figure still marks a staggering 462% increase from 2011 levels, highlighting ongoing challenges in the city’s fight against gun violence.
