The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the state’s second case of chronic wasting disease (CWD), commonly referred to as ‘zombie deer’ disease, in a white-tailed deer found in Posey County. CWD is a contagious neurological condition that can be fatal for deer and other members of the Cervidae family, and it has been reported in wild deer populations across 36 states, heightening the urgency for monitoring and management initiatives.
In response to this recent detection, the DNR plans to enhance surveillance efforts during the 2025-2026 deer hunting season in Posey and adjacent counties to better understand the disease’s spread. The implications for wildlife management and hunting practices are significant, prompting interest from local hunters and conservationists as they seek strategies to mitigate the impact of this serious and incurable disease.
