The “Justice for J6” rally held in September 2021 has resulted in financial ramifications for government agencies, costing taxpayers at least $792,500 to support U.S. Capitol Police. The majority of these expenses, approximately $580,000, stem from the D.C. police’s response efforts, as they activated their entire force in anticipation of potential unrest surrounding a demonstration supporting those arrested during the January 6 insurrection.
In addition to local law enforcement, the National Guard also contributed to the significant response, incurring costs of about $153,000. While local agencies are accustomed to managing the logistics of protests, the heightened security measures emphasized the challenges posed by past events, like the January 6 Capitol riot. The full financial impact remains unclear as Capitol Police plan to evaluate their own expenditures and finalize the total costs by December.
