A new law aimed at improving protections for domestic violence victims, known as Karina’s Law, officially takes effect on Mother’s Day. This legislation mandates that law enforcement confiscate firearms from alleged abusers within 96 hours of a protection order being issued, a direct response to the tragic events surrounding the deaths of Karina Gonzalez and her daughter Daniela, who were fatally shot by Gonzalez’s husband in July 2023.
Named in memory of Karina Gonzalez, who endured decades of abuse, the law reflects the urgent need for stronger domestic violence protections, especially as related deaths spiked by 110% in Illinois last year. Her son, Manny Alvarez, advocates passionately for this law, stating that his mother’s story will help save lives and ensure that her sacrifices are not forgotten. The law’s implementation marks a significant step towards holding offenders accountable and providing victims with better security.
