Maine Proposes Bills to Ease Gun Laws Near Schools

Two new bills in Maine seek to relax gun regulations around schools, allowing adults with permits to legally carry and discharge concealed firearms on school grounds. The sponsor argues this measure enhances safety, citing that many mass shootings occur in areas designated as gun-free zones, as highlighted by Gun Owners of Maine President Laura Whitcomb.

In addition to allowing concealed carry, another proposed bill would permit gun owners to fire on private property within 500 feet of a school without fear of prosecution. Public testimony on these bills revealed no opposition, raising questions about the implications for school safety across the state.
