Michigan Considers Tougher Gun Laws Amid Rising Gun Deaths

Michigan lawmakers are exploring measures to strengthen gun laws as the state’s gun death rate has surged by 25% over the past decade. A key aspect of the proposed solutions includes implementing strict safe storage regulations that require firearms to be locked, unloaded, and stored separately from ammunition, according to research from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.

The study indicates that secure firearm storage could significantly reduce incidents of unintentional shootings and suicides, along with preventing gun thefts. Currently, 26 states have adopted some form of safe storage laws, with Michigan being among them. In a recent interview, Bre Teamer discusses these crucial statistics with Katherine Hoops from the Johns Hopkins Center, highlighting proactive steps that can be taken to mitigate further gun violence in the state.
