NYC Programs Connect Youth with Careers Amid Violence

An East Harlem anti-violence program, Getting Out and Staying Out, secures a $25,000 city grant to continue its youth career readiness initiative, which includes paid internships for teens and young adults. This funding comes amid a broader $295,000 allocation for various uptown programs aimed at reducing youth gun violence, as announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Despite experiencing heightened gun violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, East Harlem has seen a significant decline in shootings due to community support and initiatives. From 2023 to 2025, shootings near public housing complexes decreased by about 30%, compared to a citywide drop of just 7%. Participants in the program will gain access to over 50 potential employers and learn documentary filmmaking, fostering creative expression while addressing serious community issues.
