Reported gun violence in New York State has reached its lowest level since tracking began in 2006, as announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. New statistics reveal a 15% decline in shooting victims and a 9% drop in injury-related shooting incidents for the period from January to April 2025, when compared to the previous year. These figures come from 28 police departments participating in the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative, underscoring a concerted effort to enhance public safety.
In addition to the significant drop in gun-related incidents, crime categories such as robbery and burglary have also decreased markedly in the 57 counties outside of New York City. Specifically, motor vehicle thefts fell by 27%, while robberies and burglaries declined by 11% and 8% respectively. Hochul emphasized that maintaining the safety of New Yorkers remains a top priority for her administration, as efforts to combat gun violence continue to show positive results.
