A 20-year-old man from St. Thomas has been arrested for illegal gun possession after a shooting left 28-year-old Shyiane Degallerie dead during a dispute over a vehicle collision. The suspect, Ajani Prentice, is not charged with Degallerie’s death, but police reports suggest he may have acted in self-defense, as Degallerie was seen brandishing a firearm in the confrontation that occurred in the area of Oswald Harris Court.
According to police, the situation escalated when Degallerie called 911 to report the accident, only to be heard cursing and then followed by gunfire. Witness accounts and surveillance video appear to show the chaotic events leading up to the shooting, with Prentice stating he shot Degallerie after witnessing him aim a gun at his family member’s vehicle. This incident marks Prentice’s sixth arrest in recent years, raising questions about the escalating violence and the circumstances surrounding gun possession in the community.
