The Round Rock Independent School District (ISD) Police Department is actively pursuing a grant from the Capital Area Council of Governments to support a community firearm safety initiative that includes distributing firearm locks to local families. Police Chief Ryan Urrutia highlighted the need for this initiative during an April 17 board meeting, emphasizing the importance of safety measures for households that may possess firearms.
If funding is secured, the district plans to offer between 12,000 and 15,000 cable and trigger locks, along with educational literature on firearm safety. Urrutia notes that many families may inherit firearms or come upon them unexpectedly, and providing these tools aims to enhance security for the community. The district expects to learn about the grant’s status before the start of the 2025-26 school year.
