A 19-year-old named Robert Donnelle Hughes is facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing 26-year-old Nathaniel McCowan in a brazen robbery over a PlayStation 5 in San Leandro. The incident occurred on April 1, 2024, when Hughes, who worked at FedEx, reportedly shot McCowan during the robbery and fled the scene in a Honda with accomplices. Authorities later identified Hughes as a suspect through surveillance footage and additional evidence.
Prosecutors officially charged Hughes on February 27, 2025, with murder and possession of a concealed firearm. McCowan, who had recently gone through a divorce and was struggling financially, was attempting to sell personal items online to make ends meet. The Alameda County District Attorney emphasized the tragic reminder of how quickly a robbery can escalate into violence, urging the community to take action against gun violence. Hughes remains in custody without bail and is scheduled for court on March 6.
