A 16-year-old is dead and a Detroit police officer is injured following a shooting on the city’s east side late Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when officers on routine patrol spotted three masked individuals near Chester and Neff, leading to a foot chase and an altercation during which the officer was shot in the hand.
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about youth violence in Detroit, as it follows several high-profile shootings involving minors. Police Chief Todd Bettison emphasized the need for parental vigilance regarding curfews and underage possession of firearms, stating that the youths were “violating curfew” at the time of the incident. As investigations continue, authorities recover a .40 caliber handgun from the scene and are in search of a third suspect who fled.
