Texas House Approves Bill for Armed Election Judges

The Texas House has approved a bill that allows election judges to carry concealed handguns at polling places to enhance their safety, especially as they face increasing threats. This legislation, known as House Bill 1128, received bipartisan discussion and passed with a vote of 89 to 53, highlighting concerns over the safety of these workers, who are mostly volunteers serving their communities.

Supporters of the bill, including its sponsor Rep. Carrie Isaac, cite incidents of violence against poll workers during the 2024 election, including bomb threats and physical assaults, as pressing reasons for the need for armed security. Critics, however, question whether arming election judges could potentially escalate confrontations at polling places rather than protect voters and staff. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
