Trump Administration Cuts Gun Inspectors by Two-Thirds

The Trump administration plans to reduce the number of inspectors monitoring federally licensed gun dealers by two-thirds, from 800 to just 259. This significant cut comes as part of a broader strategy to weaken the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (A.T.F.) and may limit the government’s ability to stop illegal firearms sales, raising alarms among gun safety advocates.

The Justice Department’s move follows a series of controversial decisions, including permitting the sale of “forced reset triggers” that enhance firearm capabilities and blocking $1 billion in grants for mental health programs aimed at preventing gun violence. Critics argue these actions not only contradict the safety responsibilities of the federal government but also essentially pave the way for an increase in gun violence.
