An 80-year-old man, Reuben Arthur Leonard, has been charged with two counts of murder following the fatal shooting of 11-year-old Ashly McFarland in Sumter, South Carolina. Leonard, armed with an assault rifle, reportedly targeted McFarland’s home after previously complaining about neighbors conducting target practice in their yard. In a shocking twist, police discovered that Leonard had also killed his 76-year-old wife just hours before the attack on McFarland.
During the incident, Leonard allegedly broke into the home while approximately ten people were present, intending to kill everyone there. Emergency responders arrived but could not save McFarland, who suffered a gunshot wound. Witnesses reported family members tackled Leonard, restraining him until police arrived at the scene. Investigators are still working to uncover the motive behind the shootings, as Leonard’s prior complaints to authorities about target practice had been deemed legal.
