New Zealand’s introduction of a digital firearms registry is proving instrumental in combating gun crime, with over 231,000 active licence holders contributing to safer communities. In a recent incident involving a Mongrel Mob prospect, police traced multiple illegal firearms back to their registered owner through the registry, leading to the suspension of the individual’s firearms licence and the confiscation of their firearms.
This system, initiated in response to the tragic Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019, enables law enforcement to swiftly identify the origin of firearms and hold accountable those who unlawfully supply them. With one in 20 New Zealanders holding a firearms licence, the potential to reduce gun-related offenses through collaborative community efforts has never been more evident.
